Renewal of the arcade ceilings in the pedestrian zone and at the town hall square
The renovation of the arcade ceilings in the Lebach pedestrian zone and at the town hall square is making visible progress. With an investment volume of around 1.5 million euros, the city of Lebach is currently renewing the entire ceiling construction in the arcade area. A total of around 2,000 square meters of ceiling surface will be renovated and technically brought up to the latest standard.
The dismantling and disposal work of the previous ceiling panels has now been largely completed. In the upcoming construction phases, modern ceiling panels will be installed, which will impress with a significantly brighter and friendlier look. The new ceiling construction will be complemented by modern lighting, which will significantly enhance the entire arcade area in the future.
The arcades are a defining feature of downtown Lebach. They offer the possibility, especially during rainy weather, to walk along the buildings with dry feet and reach the shops, gastronomy businesses, and service providers. From the town hall, the covered walkway extends along numerous destinations – including an orthopedic specialist shop, various gastronomy businesses such as pubs, an ice cream parlor, a café bistro, a fish shop with a restaurant, and an Asian market, a pharmacy, and a dance school. On the opposite side, the arcade passage connects among others a boxing specialty store, a travel agency, a medical supply store, a hair salon, an insurance agency, a social thrift store, a fitness studio, a butcher shop, a fashion market, a Chinese restaurant, a self-defense course studio, and a grocery store. In addition, there are practices and service providers.
As part of the work, the passage area between the town hall and the building section where the police station was housed until recently is also being technically upgraded. The existing connecting ventilation ducts there have been completely dismantled. They will no longer be needed in the future because the ventilation systems destroyed in the flood event will not be reinstalled centrally in the town hall basement. Instead, the city is relying on decentralized systems in the respective building parts. Additionally, an energy improvement is planned in this area. Since the concrete ceiling there has so far been completely uninsulated, the rooms above cool down significantly, especially during the winter months. Therefore, additional insulation will be installed on the underside of the ceiling over an area of around 280 square meters.
“With the renewal of the arcade ceilings, we are investing not only in the technical and energy modernization of a central downtown area but also in the attractiveness and quality of stay in the pedestrian zone. The new, brightly designed ceilings and the modern lighting will give the arcades a friendlier appearance in the future, further enhance the character of the newly designed downtown area, and sustainably strengthen it,” explains Lebach’s mayor Klauspeter Brill. “The measure fits seamlessly into the extensive redesign of our downtown, which we have implemented step by step in recent years. With the redesign of the pedestrian zone and town hall square, investments in accessibility, quality of stay, and the overall cityscape, we have created the conditions for a lively and future-proof downtown. The renewal of the arcade ceilings is another important building block in this development. Our goal is to further strengthen the downtown as the vibrant center of our city – as a place to shop, work, and linger for young and old. The arcades will not only appear brighter and friendlier in the future but also make an important contribution to people enjoying spending time in our downtown and using the local offerings.”
