Ministry of the Interior hands over earmarked funds to the district town of Merzig for new vehicle hall and renovation of the existing fire station in Mechern
For the expansion and comprehensive renovation of the building of the Mechern fire district, State Secretary Torsten Lang handed over the required earmarked funds to Mayor Marcus Hoffeld on Thursday, July 16, on behalf of the Ministry of the Interior, Building and Sports.
“Due to the procurement of the new fire-fighting vehicle for Mechern, the district town of Merzig decided to also purchase the immediately adjoining plot to the already existing fire station in Mechern in order to expand and renovate it,” emphasizes Mayor Marcus Hoffeld.
On the purchased plot at Brunnenstraße 8, according to the city administration’s plans, a new vehicle hall will be built. Previously missing changing and sanitary facilities will also be constructed to meet the space requirements of the fire brigade and to create optimal working, training, and recreational conditions overall.
Within the scope of the measure, the applicable energy requirements according to current laws and technical regulations are also to be implemented. The construction costs have been estimated at around €688,905. The Ministry of the Interior, Building and Sports is subsidizing this with €305,640.
During the current construction work, especially the demolition work, significant static problems of the old building have emerged, which require a redesign of the construction project by the city administration. As part of the expansion and comprehensive renovation of the building, this will overall also lead to additional costs. These have not yet been finally quantified; nevertheless, the Ministry of the Interior, Building and Sports has already indicated its intention to participate in the additional costs with further subsidy funds.
State Secretary Torsten Lang explains: “Our fire departments need modern and functional infrastructure so that they can perform their important work reliably. With the earmarked funds, we support the district town of Merzig in expanding the fire station in Mechern and create the conditions for the new emergency vehicle to be optimally housed. This is an investment in the safety of citizens and at the same time a clear commitment to strengthening volunteer work.”
“In our district town, we have a volunteer fire brigade consisting of 15 fire districts. Here, in the Mechern fire district, currently 24 active firefighters serve on a voluntary basis. The youth fire brigade and senior fire brigade strengthen the fire district with a total of eleven and four members respectively. This good structure ensures that in an emergency help is on site in the shortest possible time. I thank the volunteer firefighters very much for their commitment and I am pleased that we can significantly improve the infrastructure with our planned construction measure,” said the head of administration.
