More than 120 emergency personnel prevent spread to forest - six firefighters slightly injured
A major fire this morning triggered a large-scale firefighting operation in the municipality of Schiffweiler. At 11:43 a.m., the fire districts of Heiligenwald and Landsweiler-Reden were initially alerted to a garage fire with threat of expansion to an adjacent residential building.
Already on the way, a widely visible column of smoke was noticeable. Upon arrival of the first responders, the fire had already spread to the roof frame of the house.
Fortunately, a patrol of the Federal Police happened to be nearby. After their arrival, the officers assisted with evacuating the building. Once it was quickly confirmed that no persons were in danger, the fire department could fully concentrate on firefighting.
Since the flames threatened to spread to a neighboring forest, the fire department set up a protective line via a roof monitor to prevent the fire from spreading. After the turntable ladder arrived, the firefighting attack was additionally supported from above.
Due to the heavy smoke development, a population warning was issued. To support the numerous breathing apparatus wearers, the respiratory protection vehicle from Neunkirchen was also called in. Additionally, a partial unit of the Ottweiler fire department assisted the emergency personnel with site hygiene.
During the operation, Itzenplitzstraße and Wemmetsweilerstraße had to be completely closed. Furthermore, the power supply in the affected area was proactively shut off.
Later in the operation, part of the roof structure collapsed. For safety reasons, firefighting inside the building was no longer possible afterwards, so extinguishing work was continued exclusively from the outside. To assess the building’s structural stability, the Lower Building Supervision as well as a building expert consultant from the Technical Relief Organization (THW) Illingen were called in.
To ensure basic protection in the municipality of Schiffweiler, the Merchweiler fire department took over fire protection in the municipal area during the ongoing operation.
In total, more than 120 emergency personnel from fire department, police, emergency medical services, THW, Federal Police, public order office, and municipal depot were deployed.
During the firefighting efforts, six firefighters suffered minor injuries and were medically treated.
On site, Mayor Cedric Jochum, District Fire Inspector Michael Sieslack, District Fire Chief Sascha Cattarius, State Fire Inspector Timo Meyer, as well as the First Deputy of the Neunkirchen district representing the District Administrator, Klaus Dieter Woll, gained an overview of the situation.
By around 6:00 p.m., the operation could be concluded. Already during the ongoing operation, the inter-municipal joint workshop of the municipalities Illingen, Merchweiler and Schiffweiler was alerted. There, vehicles, equipment, and protective clothing were cleaned and serviced until late in the evening to restore the full operational readiness of the fire departments as quickly as possible.
Especially during the hours-long and exhausting firefighting efforts, the extraordinary solidarity in the community became evident once again. Numerous residents spontaneously supported the emergency personnel with drinks, food, seating, and cold towels. These attentive gestures were a great help given the high temperatures and enormous physical strain and were gratefully accepted by the firefighters. Such signs of appreciation are by no means a matter of course. The Schiffweiler fire department sincerely thanks all citizens who contributed with their support to ensuring the care of the emergency personnel during the prolonged large-scale operation.
