“Stadtradeln” 2026: Around 230,000 Kilometers for Climate Protection and Sustainable Mobility

The “Stadtradeln” campaign once again motivated many people in Saarbrücken this year to switch to cycling for their everyday journeys.

From Saturday, May 30 to Friday, June 19, 1,272 participants in 65 teams covered a total of 229,566 kilometers. They saved around 38 tons of CO₂ and completed a total of 19,751 bike trips.

These figures are slightly below those of the record year 2025, which was marked by an exceptionally high level of participation, but still remain at a high level.

The participants consciously used bicycles for three weeks to get to work, school, shopping, or leisure activities. In doing so, they made an important contribution to climate protection, sustainable mobility, and their own health.

Mayor Barbara Meyer is pleased with the strong commitment of Saarbrücken residents: “’Stadtradeln’ shows anew every year how many people are willing to switch to cycling for their daily journeys. Over 229,000 kilometers cycled together and 38 tons of CO₂ saved are a strong signal for climate protection and sustainable mobility in Saarbrücken. I warmly thank all participants for their dedication.”

Great Participation from University and Schools

The “School Cycling” event, held for the eighth time in Saarland, was particularly successful again. In Saarbrücken, 19 school teams with 631 active cyclists took part. This keeps “School Cycling” an important element of the campaign and helps to inspire children and young people at an early stage to choose the bicycle as an environmentally friendly means of transport.

In the total kilometers ranking, Saarland University was clearly ahead once again with 23,140 kilometers. It was followed by the Otto-Hahn-Gymnasium with 14,457 kilometers and the Marienschule Saarbrücken with 11,559 kilometers.

Saarland University also fielded the largest team again, with a total of 175 people. Following were the Gebundene Ganztagsgrundschule Wiedheck (Brebach-Fechingen) with 94 and the Otto-Hahn-Gymnasium with 88 participants.

In addition to schools, universities, businesses, clubs, and private teams, three members of local councils actively participated in “Stadtradeln.”

The “Stadtradeln” campaign is supported by the Ministry for Environment, Climate, Mobility, Agriculture and Consumer Protection of Saarland.
