Ministry of Environment supports city with around 135,000 euros
For the creation of a flood and heavy rainfall precautionary concept, the Ministry for Environment, Climate, Mobility, Agriculture and Consumer Protection has pledged grants amounting to 135,155.25 euros to the city of Wadern. The concept aims to sustainably reduce damage caused by flooding.
„The development of the flood and heavy rain prevention concept for the city of Wadern is an important step to prepare citizens for the possible consequences of heavy rain events. After all, only those who are informed about dangers and know the ways to counteract or mitigate these dangers can protect themselves,“ says Environment Minister Petra Berg. „While we cannot completely prevent such events, greater losses and damages can certainly be minimized through the best possible precautions. That is why the state covers 90 percent of the eligible costs for developing a corresponding concept in the municipalities.“
Mayor Jochen Kuttler also expressly welcomes the funding: “June 11, 2018, clearly showed us in Wadern the damage that heavy rain can cause in a very short time. Many citizens, public buildings, and municipal facilities were affected at that time. That is precisely why the flood and heavy rain prevention concept is not a theoretical paper for us, but an important step towards greater safety and better preparedness. I am convinced that consistent precaution, together with the municipalities, will continue to be the right path for Saarland in the future. The support from the state is very well invested money. Every euro invested in prevention helps to avoid or at least significantly reduce damages. For this, we are expressly grateful to the state.”
The Saarland has a significant interest in implementing preventive flood and heavy rain precautionary measures and therefore supports municipalities in the development of corresponding concepts within the framework of the guideline for funding measures for flood and heavy rain risk management (FRL-HWS). The objectives of these measures focus on reducing flooding caused by floods and/or heavy rain and the associated negative impacts on protected assets such as human health, the environment, cultural heritage, and economic activities. To date, 33 municipalities in the Saarland have completed their flood and heavy rain precautionary concepts, with another 15 currently being developed. In total, 40 municipalities have municipal heavy rain hazard maps. Since 2019, the state has made over seven million euros available for all measures in the area of flood and heavy rain management.
