Anniversary wine „Kuno von Pfullingen“ combines history, wine tradition, and commemorative culture
Official presentation on July 12 at the monastery festival
Tholey. With a specially produced anniversary wine, the municipality of Tholey, the Benedictine Abbey of Tholey, and theWeinGut Benedict Loosen Erbenfrom Ürzig commemorate Saint Kuno of Pfullingen, who has a very special connection to Tholey.
The anniversary edition for the 960th death anniversary of Saint Kuno is available in two variants: as Ürziger Würzgarten Riesling Kabinett feinherb "Kranklei – Alte Reben" from the 2022 vintage and as Ürziger Würzgarten Riesling Spätlese "Kranklei – Alte Reben" from the 2024 vintage. Both wines come from the traditional steep vineyards of Ürzig on the Mosel – the very place where Kuno von Pfullingen was murdered in 1066 on his journey to Trier.
Kuno, born around 1016 in Pfullingen, was to take office as Archbishop of Trier at the behest of King Henry IV.
However, political opponents kidnapped and killed him in Ürzig on the Moselle before he could assume his office.
At the initiative of the then Bishop of Verdun and the abbot of the Benedictine Abbey of Tholey, his body was transferred to Tholey, where Kuno was buried in the abbey church on July 10, 1066. To this day, an inscription in front of the tabernacle commemorates his burial site. With the anniversary wine, the project partners create a symbolic link between Ürzig, the place of his death, and Tholey, his final resting place.
The own-rooted Riesling vines for these wines in his memory have grown on the Ürzig Sundial.
It is one of the oldest and best-known sundials on the Moselle and remains in the family ownership of WeinGut Benedict Loosen Erben. It was mounted on the remains of a medieval watchtower
and features in the center of its Roman dial the figure of
Saint Kuno.
The time is displayed by the shadow cast by sunlight on a gnomon on the flat dial.
The ancient vines for the two anniversary wines thus grow in a historic location closely connected to Kuno’s life journey.
“With the anniversary wine, we connect history, culture, and regional identity in a special way. The close collaboration between the Benedictine Abbey of Tholey, the municipality of Tholey, and the winery from Ürzig clearly demonstrates how the culture of remembrance can be kept alive beyond local boundaries,” emphasize Mayor Andreas Maldener and Abbot Wendelinus Naumann in conversation with Claudia Müller and Bernhard Föhr from WeinGut Benedict Loosen Erben.
A special significance is also attributed to the label of the anniversary edition. The artist from Tholey, Sabine Caspar, designed it as a deliberate narrative image. At the center is a vine with leaves and grapes as a symbol of growth, stability, and the passing on of responsibility across generations. At the same time, it refers to the wine's origin from Ürzig.
The branched vines reflect Kuno's life journey and symbolically represent the stages Pfullingen, Cologne, and Tholey. Sabine Caspar also integrated a stylized "K" into the vine structure, harmoniously blending into the design and referencing Kuno's name without displaying it overtly. The subdued color scheme is inspired by wood, earth, and grapevines, emphasizing the timeless character of the motif.
The equal placement of the logos of the municipality and the Benedictine Abbey also carries symbolic power. It represents the close and trusting cooperation of both partners as well as the connection between historical tradition and the present-day community.
The commemorative wine is suitable both as a reminder of the 960th anniversary of Kuno of Pfullingen's death and as a special gift for wine lovers and those interested in history. The edition is available in two versions. The Riesling Kabinett costs 14 euros, the Riesling Spätlese 17 euros.
