According to the Statistical Office of Saarland, consumer prices increased by 2.8 percent in June 2026 compared to the same month of the previous year. The final inflation rate for the previous month, May 2026, was 3.1 percent. Compared to the previous month, the consumer price index fell by 0.2 percent and reached a value of 124.5 (base year 2020 = 100).

Prices for energy

In Saarland, price declines in the energy sector were observed again in June 2026. Compared to the same month of the previous year, the costs for household energy fell by 2.7 percent. Electricity prices recorded a decrease of 6.0 percent, natural gas by 2.4 percent, and district heating by 5.4 percent. A massive price increase was also noted in the reporting month of June for heating oil. Prices rose by 21.7 percent during the period under review. Firewood, wood pellets, and comparable fuels showed a price increase of 10.8 percent compared to June of the previous year.

The prices for fuels at Saarland gas stations increased significantly during the reporting period June 2026 despite the fuel discount. Causes for the extremely high fuel prices included, among others, the Iran war and the general energy crisis. Compared to the same month the previous year, residents of Saarland had to pay 17.8 percent more for fuel.

Without taking into account the overall energy prices, consumer prices in Saarland rose by 2.2 percent in June 2026 compared to the same month the previous year.

Prices for food

In June 2026, consumers in Saarland experienced an average price increase of 1.9 percent for food compared to the same month of the previous year. This means that the inflation rate for food remained below the overall inflation for the fourth consecutive month.

In the area of meat and meat products, the price increase was 4.6 percent. Prices for fish, fish products, and seafood rose by 0.8 percent during the period under review.

Prices for dairy products and eggs fell by 2.5 percent over the same period.

Especially for edible fats and edible oils, there is a price decrease of 15.1 percent to report.

Prices for goods

Prices for clothing and shoes have increased by 2.4 percent compared to the same month last year.

Prices for services

Consumers paid higher prices than in the same month of the previous year for both restaurant services (+2.7 percent) and overnight stays (+3.5 percent).

In the gastronomy sector, prices for food and beverages in restaurants and inns increased by 2.7 percent compared to the previous year.

Note:

The media release contains preliminary results of the calculations for the Saarland consumer price index. Final results will be published in the Statistical Report MI2 on the internet (www.statistik.saarland.de).

Explanation:

An inflation rate (change in the consumer price index) of 2.0 percent simply means that a consumer would have to spend 20 euros or 2.0 percent more today for an unchanged basket of goods that cost, for example, 1,000 euros a year ago. This basket includes almost all goods and services purchased by private households. In addition to food and beverages, it also includes housing rents as well as clothing items, vacation trips, or hairdressing services. Price increases in some goods are always offset by price decreases in others. The price development of individual goods is taken into account in the calculation of the consumer price index according to the respective expenditure shares of an average household.
