New greenery and improved recreational quality: State capital enhances Cottbuser Platz
The state capital Saarbrücken is currently redesigning Cottbuser Platz in Malstatt: The aim is to create a modern, inviting place that serves as a space for relaxation and a meeting point in the neighborhood. To achieve this, the square is being upgraded and the quality of stay on site improved.
Against this background, the city is creating new recreational areas with seating as well as play areas for children, redesigning the green spaces, and improving lighting and pathways. Through this enhancement, the square will be restored to its original purpose, and therefore it will no longer be available for parking in the future.
In addition, the existing pedestrian and bicycle path on Lebacher Street, which passes by the square, will be widened. This is intended to provide more space for pedestrians and cyclists, thus creating a safer connection.
As part of the redesign, parts of the square will be unsealed and additional green spaces created. This allows rainwater to infiltrate better and the area to heat up less in summer. New planting areas, site-appropriate shrubs, and diverse perennial mixtures create habitats for insects and birds.
Cottbuser Platz is closed during the works; parking on the square has not been possible since the start of the work. Residents can use the
surrounding public free parking spaces in the neighborhood as an alternative. Paid parking spaces are available nearby in the "Lebacher Straße" parking lot towards Ludwigskreisel.
The work is expected to continue until spring 2027 and will cost around 570,000 euros.
Background
The measure is part of the urban development funding program "Social Cohesion Malstatt." It is jointly funded by the state capital Saarbrücken as well as by the state and federal government. The program serves, among other things, to improve the quality of housing and life as well as the diversity of use in the neighborhoods.
