Press Release 74/2026
Heat protection in Saarland
High temperatures require targeted heat protection in everyday life
In view of the ongoing heatwave, the Saarland Ministry of Health reiterates its recommendations on heat protection, which were already published last week.
The ministry warns of health risks and calls on the public to be especially vigilant and to adjust their behavior accordingly. Without sufficient fluid intake, the body loses important salts and minerals, which in the worst case can lead to circulatory failure or dehydration. On hot days, it is therefore particularly important to make sure to drink enough water and unsweetened beverages.
Infants, toddlers, as well as elderly and ill people are particularly at risk during heat. For the latter, relatives should seek daily contact, ensure adequate hydration, cooling measures, and secure storage of medications. If symptoms such as confusion, high fever (above 39 degrees), impaired consciousness, or repeated vomiting occur, the emergency number 112 must be called immediately.
It is generally recommended that the population regularly visit shady places, parks, green areas, or air-conditioned indoor spaces. To cool indoor areas, windows, curtains, and blinds should be kept closed during the day and only ventilated in the early morning or late evening hours.
Outdoor stays and physical activities should, whenever possible, be scheduled for the cooler morning and evening hours, as the midday heat can put a heavy strain on the circulatory system. Outdoor pools, bathing lakes, and water playgrounds, as well as shady forest and hiking trails, provide cooling and summer experiences. Light meals such as fruit or salads are particularly suitable for nourishment on hot days.
Employers have a special responsibility regarding the heat protection of employees. Heat stress can significantly impair performance in the workplace. Employers are legally obliged to take measures to protect against heat. These include, for example, flexible working hours, shading, sufficient drinking options, and ventilation.
Furthermore, the ministry points out to never leave people or animals in overheated vehicles, as extremely dangerous temperatures can develop very quickly there.
