19.06.2026 City of Völklingen – Press Release No. 104/2026 Stadtradeln 2026: Bicycle Tour with the City Administration As part of the Stadtradeln campaign, Mayor Stephan Tautz invited bicycle enthusiasts from Völklingen to a guided bike tour through the northern part of the city. The medium-difficulty route, selected by ADFC local group leader Hans Holderbaum, led almost entirely car-free through forest and agricultural areas. With 17 participants, the turnout increased again compared to the previous year. Along the approximately 25-kilometer route, various stops were made where insights into Völklingen’s history as well as current developments were provided. The stops included the former refuge castle on the Heidstock, the former Viktoriabahn for coal transport, the Simschelweiher pond with its newly established nature and tree educational trail, as well as the monument at the Mathildenschacht mine shaft, which commemorates the mining accident of March 16, 1907. Other stations included the former Petershof of the Völklingen Ironworks and the once popular viewing point "Haus Saarblick" on the Röchlinghöhe. Passing by the new senior care homes Domicil Schillerpark and St. Josef, the route then led to the sculpture "Kubushochzeit" at Gatehouse 10, where information about this distinctive landmark at the town entrance toward Bous was shared.
