Monday (June 15): "Day of Building Cleaning" – 1,640 Cleaning Staff in the Saarlouis District For Recognition and Against Old-Age Poverty: Building Cleaners
in the Saarlouis District Expect a "Boost in Respect and Wages"
IG BAU: "Cleaning worker would have to work over 70 years to reach the average pension"
They ensure clean offices, schools, and nursing homes: Around 1,640 building cleaners work in the Saarlouis district. “But not everything is settled with them: Often, there is a lack of respect for their work. And there is always a problem with the money: Those who scrub, vacuum, and take out others’ trash keep everything running but usually earn only a low wage. At the latest with retirement, poverty in old age then threatens,” says Ute Langenbahn from IG BAU Saar-Trier. On the upcoming “Building Cleaning Day” next Monday (note for editors: June 15), IG BAU is therefore calling for a “boost in respect and wages” for work in the cleaning industry. It is about greater recognition and a decent livelihood – to combat old-age poverty, says Langenbahn.
“Those who ensure all their lives that others can live a ‘clean life’ must not end up relying on state support in the end,” says Langenbahn. A building cleaner working full-time must, based on today’s usual wages in the industry, work for over 70 years in purely mathematical terms to reach the average pension, according to the chairwoman of IG BAU Saar-Trier. “Cleaning and retirement – in the truest sense of the word – is a sign of poverty. Stark wage differences, however, are a risk to social cohesion – and low wages thus represent social explosives,” warns Ute Langenbahn.
She appeals to the Bundestag members of CDU and SPD from the Saarlouis district and region to counteract this in the upcoming pension reform: “Those who have spent their working lives mopping floors, cleaning windows, and keeping toilets clean deserve to be able to live in dignity from their pension when they are old,” demands the chairwoman of IG BAU Saar-Trier.
Furthermore, there must be a “substantial wage increase” in the upcoming collective bargaining round for employees in the building cleaning trade. “The 34 building cleaning companies in the Saarlouis district should already prepare themselves for this,” says Ute Langenbahn. She bases the figures on employees and companies in building cleaning on data from the Employment Agency.
