Herbal scent from the biosphere delights young and old
Workshop in Blieskastel combines nature experience, knowledge about medicinal plants, and regional enjoyment
A wonderful scent of lemon balm, sage, rosemary, mint, oregano, and many popular garden herbs filled the air during the herb workshop of the Coordination Office for Sustainable Youth Work of the Saarpfalz District/Young Biosphere. Together, the participants created an aromatic biosphere herb syrup that not only tastes delicious but also reflects the diversity and richness of the local nature.
At the beginning of the workshop, the participants embarked on an exciting herb expedition through Blieskastel and the community garden. Numerous fragrant herbs and medicinal plants were discovered, collected, and their diverse uses were presented. The plantain, known as a natural remedy for minor injuries, attracted special interest and was the basis for many interesting conversations.
Afterwards, the participants were able to let their creativity run free and customize the syrup bottles. This resulted not only in delicious, but also lovingly crafted memories of a successful afternoon.
“Our local herbs are a valuable treasure of the Bliesgau biosphere. Such workshops vividly convey knowledge about the nature on our doorstep and demonstrate how closely enjoyment, health, and regional identity are connected. I am very pleased to see the enthusiasm with which the participants engaged,” emphasizes District Administrator and Association Chairman Frank John. A heartfelt thank you goes to Paula Jacob for the dedicated and inspiring leadership of the workshop. The organizers also thank the Culture and Environment Foundation of the Saarpfalz District Savings Bank for enabling the workshop through their support.
How successful the workshop was became evident just a few days later: during the lecture "Climate Change and Health" at the Gersheim Cultural Center, which took place as part of the Biosphere Lecture Series of the Culture and Environment Foundation of the Kreissparkasse Saarpfalz. The homemade biosphere herbal syrup was served to the guests. The refreshing summer drink made from herbs collected in the biosphere was very well received and delighted visitors with its natural taste and regional origin.
