Four of them had to be taken to surrounding hospitals for further treatment with injuries of varying severity. In an operation that lasted until the morning, the firefighters managed to extinguish the fire. Due to the fire and smoke damage, the multi-family house is no longer habitable.
The sight that greeted the firefighters, emergency services, and police around 3 a.m. on Langenstrichstraße was threatening: thick smoke poured from the first floor of a multi-family building - there was a fire in one of the apartments. People at several windows facing Langenstrichstraße and the garden made themselves noticed by calling out and gesturing. Fire and smoke had already blocked their escape route through the stairwell to safety outside.
A first person was able to bring the crew of the Neunkirchen fire department's ambulance to safety from a higher window using a ladder hastily brought from the neighborhood. From even higher up - from the attic - two more men were rescued with the turntable ladder of the Neunkirchen fire brigade, which arrived shortly afterward. Meanwhile, firefighters and police officers together positioned a portable fire ladder in the garden. Two more men climbed down this ladder into the safe garden. Four of the five rescued had to be medically treated on site by the emergency medical service and subsequently admitted to nearby hospitals for treatment. To coordinate the various dispatched ambulances and emergency doctors, the Chief Emergency Physician and the Organizational Leader also drove to the fire in Langenstrichstraße as the emergency service incident command.
