All construction measures for the renovation of the bridge and the renewal of the roadway have been completed on schedule since the beginning. According to information from DB and LfS, the intersection at Lothringer Straße can be reopened for motor vehicles, bicycles, and pedestrians starting from December 20.
The lifting of the closure will be carried out in sections throughout the planned day and will be completed by the evening. The remaining finishing work can be carried out without another full closure.
With the renewal of the railway overpass, the future structural stability of the bridge is once again ensured. There is now significantly more space for pedestrians and cyclists under the bridge, as well as better lighting conditions.
"There were no alternatives to the bridge renovation carried out with the associated closures. The resulting traffic restrictions were a great challenge for all of us. For this reason, I thank all citizens for their patience and understanding," explains Mayor Marcus Hoffeld.
Following the work by Deutsche Bahn and the LfS, the district town of Merzig will continue next year with the visual enhancement of the town entrance area around the bridge. The first construction phase for the redesign already took place in the past years with the beautification of the outskirts near the Stadthallen parking lot.
"All measures as a whole, including new lighting, will sustainably enhance the appearance of the city entrance," said the head of the city administration. "I also thank the officials of Deutsche Bahn and the State Road Construction Agency, as well as all companies and their employees. The schedule was adhered to without a single day of delay, which is not a given for such a large project. We were in constant communication with those responsible. It was a very good and reliable collaboration," concluded Mayor Marcus Hoffeld.
