Further stages of the wage increase are already planned for the autumn of next year and the year after. “The rise in wages for jobs on rooftops in the Saarlouis district is thus secured for three years: Ultimately, roofers have a firm prospect of a wage increase of around 10 percent,” says Ute Langenbahn. With this, IG BAU has “achieved an enormous gain” for those working in companies of the roofer guild who are also union members.
The chairwoman of IG BAU Saar-Trier emphasizes that a “tough job” is done in the 39 roofer companies in the Saarlouis district: “Whether windy, wet, cold, or scorching hot – work on the roof is hard. And the job is certainly not without risk: Roofers must be doubly careful not to make a wrong step. Just for that, they deserve the wage increase,” says Ute Langenbahn.
IG BAU also strongly advocated for a significantly higher training allowance at the bargaining table: Trainees in the roofer trade now start their apprenticeship with €1,000 per month. In the third year of training, they receive €1,460. Additionally, after completing their training, a 13th monthly salary awaits them. And next year, this will even increase by the equivalent of 8 hourly wages for roofers. “It is now even more attractive to choose the profession of roofer,” says Ute Langenbahn.
