The comrades of the Quierschied fire department, the Quierschied Red Cross, and other relief organizations such as the THW, the Malteser, Johanniter, the DLRG, and the police were deployed together with many voluntary helpers for days to avert dangers, protect material goods, and save lives. For this, the emergency personnel were honored on Monday, November 18, 2024, by the state government at the E-Werk in Saarbrücken with the "Flood Relief 2024" honorary badge.
Prime Minister Anke Rehlinger, Interior Minister Reinhold Jost, Regional Association Director Peter Gillo, and Mayor Uwe Conrad presented the awards. In their speeches, they expressed their great respect and deep gratitude to the volunteers and the work they have done in front of approximately 1,500 invited guests. The high appreciation for their selfless actions and the desire to strengthen volunteer work itself became clear. Mayor Lutz Maurer also participated in this celebration and accepted the honors on behalf of the 51 awarded firefighters together with Fire Chief Christian Peter, his deputy Tobias Schu, and the deputy district fire chief of the Quierschied district, Martin Schaum.
„I can only repeat myself: What our firefighters, as well as all voluntary helpers from other organizations, have accomplished here – and continue to do almost daily – cannot be praised and recognized enough,“ says Mayor Lutz Maurer, adding: „My deepest gratitude goes to everyone who, especially around Pentecost, put themselves, at times to the point of complete exhaustion, at the service of the citizens. This also includes the team from the Weiher power plant, local representatives Stefan Ziegler and Marcus Jung, aid organizations from other municipalities, and some private companies. I was able to witness their self-sacrificing commitment on site myself: Many, many thanks to all of you!“ The volunteer fire department of Quierschied thanks the comrades of the Merchweiler fire department who additionally took over operational readiness so that our emergency forces could travel together to Saarbrücken for the honors.
