For the German EU Council Presidency in 2020, the DFKI Saarbrücken, led by project manager Prof. Dr. Stephan Busemann, developed the EU Council Presidency Translator (EU CPT). This translation machine is offered by the Latvian company Tilde. Saarlouis is a pioneer in this field, as since 2021 the city has been using an AI-based machine translation system from the company Tilde on its website, implemented by its economic promoter Thomas Jacob. The AI currently translates into English, French, and Italian.
Mayor Speicher emphasized in his statement at the state representation of the Hanseatic City of Bremen in Berlin the importance of using AI for the modernization of public administration: "AI offers enormous opportunities for modern and efficient administrative actions. In administration, the use of AI can help make administrative processes more efficient, contribute to reducing workload, and improve communication with citizens." He stressed, that AI should not be seen as a threat to jobs, but rather as an opportunity to relieve employees from routine tasks. The time gained can be specifically used for citizen consultation or more complex administrative procedures. AI cannot be stopped, said Mayor Speicher; it is important to use it sensibly and responsibly, with the human always being at the forefront.
