The Zweckverband Natura Ill-Theel noticed a problem in Hirzweiler. The two conservationists Dr. Norman Wagner and Gerhard Zimmer discovered a significant water loss in a pond directly adjacent to the fish pond in Hirzweiler. This pond is currently being heavily used by common frogs as a spawning site in spring. Due to the water loss, the spawn and therefore the frog offspring are threatened.
Through the direct communication channel at the Illingen town hall, the Eastern fire district, responsible for the fish pond in Hirzweiler, was informed. The two firefighters Jörg Schmitt and Marvin Schmitt, who are employed by the municipality of Illingen, quickly provided assistance and pumped water from the fish pond into the adjacent pond using a pump. Approximately 80,000 liters of pond water were transferred, thereby saving the frog offspring.
