An 18-year-old novice driver from Saarlouis was driving a Ford Street KA on the Saarleinpfad near the Lisdorfer Schleuse. A 21-year-old Saarlouis resident was also seated in the passenger seat. According to initial police findings, the driver lost control of his vehicle due to inappropriate speed, left the Leinpfad, and collided with several trees. Both occupants were trapped inside the vehicle and seriously injured. They had to be rescued from the car by emergency services. After initial medical treatment, both were admitted to clinics in Merzig and Saarbrücken.
The car was completely wrecked. It was removed from the towpath by a towing service. In addition, several trees were damaged.
As indications of possible alcohol impairment of the driver emerged during the police accident investigation, a blood sample was taken from him at the clinic. The police investigations regarding the traffic accident on the Saarleinpfad, which is not approved for motor vehicles in any case, are ongoing and are being continued by the water police.
