Passersby reported a noticeable steam on the Market Square around 21:50. Upon closer inspection, they noticed that a hydrant valve had burst. The hydrant was set up for the Christmas market on the square. Uncontrolled water was spraying out of the hydrant. Due to the strong frost, the water spray created a mirror-like road surface in the area of the Market Square and parts of Lindenstraße.
The passersby alerted the firefighters at the fire station, who were still present after their weekly drill.
Two firefighters braved the water fountain and quickly shut off the water supply with a hydrant key. Meanwhile, the fire department secured the slippery hazardous area. Afterwards, the municipal service center spread the area extensively.
The police and city utilities provided support during the operation.
