Passersby noticed steam around 21:50 PM on the market square. Upon closer inspection, they found that a hydrant had burst. The hydrant was set up for the Christmas market. Uncontrolled water was flowing out of the hydrant. Due to the strong frost, the water outflow caused a mirror-like road surface in the area of the market square and parts of Lindenstraße.
The passersby alerted firefighters at the fire station, who were there after their weekly drill.
Two firefighters ventured into the water fountain and quickly turned off the water supply with a hydrant key. Meanwhile, the fire department secured the slippery hazardous area. Afterwards, the municipal works yard spread the area extensively.
The police and city utilities also provided support during the operation.
