As part of Fair Week, the Fairtrade steering group of the municipality of Eppelborn, together with representatives of the kfd St. Pius X, were present at the market day in Eppelborn with an attractively designed sales stand. It didn’t take long for the enticing “chocolate bar” to become a real visitor magnet. Espresso Caramel, Café Blanc, or perhaps white vanilla – customers had a tough choice with Irene Horras, spokesperson of the steering group. Among the customers on Tuesday morning was also Sebastian Michel, deputy mayor of the municipality. He had come to the marketplace on behalf of Mayor Andreas Feld and thanked Irene Horras and the entire steering group for their volunteer work. “It is good and important that fair trade is repeatedly brought to people’s attention and awareness is raised. It’s about fair wages and ensuring that children can enjoy their childhood carefree and receive a good education. Fairtrade encompasses all of this, and if it also tastes so delicious, we can all contribute to a fairer world,” he explained. In addition to the fairly traded chocolate, the fair trade coffee was also well received.
“Fairtrade sales are more important than ever for farmers, as production costs are skyrocketing in the producing countries,” explained Irene Horras to the interested customers. At the market stall, the women of the kfd Calmesweiler/Macherbach also offered many beautiful autumn decorations. Customers could expect hydrangea wreaths, arrangements, lavender sachets, and much more. The proceeds from these items go to aid the Ahr Valley. As surprise guests, Irene Horras was able to welcome around 70 children from the St. Josef daycare around noon. The certified “Fair Kita” had set out as part of Fair Week and visited the Eppelborn weekly market, among other places. Horas gladly treated the youngsters to delicious chocolate and engaged in conversations with the well-informed boys and girls about fair trade.
