Just in time for the start of the school year, the city of Völklingen released a coloring and storybook for children to celebrate its 1200th anniversary. The book was presented during the enrollment ceremony for first graders at the Heidstock/Luisenthal all-day elementary school. The coloring and storybook is aimed at kindergarten and elementary school children and features various Völklingen highlights across twenty illustrations. The main characters of the story are Olli and Lolli, a girl and a boy from Völklingen. Accompanied by Olli’s dog Struppi, the children visit different places in Völklingen and its districts during their holidays. Mice that power the old flywheel at the Völklingen ironworks at night, chickens escaping from an enclosure, or knights, princesses, and mythical creatures populating the castle park in the Völklingen district of Geislautern—there is plenty to discover and learn in every picture. At the end of the book, children can let their imagination run wild and create their own illustrations based on the story. “Coloring is guaranteed to never be boring, and all the illustrations relate to our city,” reported Mayor Christiane Blatt to the teachers present. The coloring book was distributed free of charge to all daycare centers and elementary schools. It can be downloaded and printed from the city of Völklingen’s website at www.voelklingen.de/nc/stadtjubilaeum.
The story was conceived by Karin Scherer, an employee of the Press and Public Relations Department of the city of Völklingen. The graduate designer, who studied graphic design in Saarbrücken, also illustrated all the motifs in the book.
