We are continuously receiving images of people in distress from the crisis areas in Ukraine. Many are fleeing the war and leaving their homes, as the situation there continues to worsen.
As the number of war refugees from Ukraine increases daily and the number of privately provided accommodations is no longer sufficient, the district town of Merzig is setting up an emergency shelter for the refugees. After consultation with local head Claus Linz and in cooperation with the Merzig-Wadern district, the THW, and the German Red Cross, the Saargauhalle Schwemlingen will be quickly converted on Thursday, 04.08.2022. This will create emergency living space for about 40-60 Ukrainians who may arrive in Merzig in the coming weeks. "We are aware that this use involves restrictions for the population, especially for local clubs," explains Mayor Marcus Hoffeld. He therefore asks for understanding for this exceptional situation. "The people in distress from Ukraine depend on our help," the town hall chief continues. The city administration is in contact with the clubs currently using the Saargauhalle to offer alternatives.
Since the number of privately provided apartments currently available is insufficient to accommodate the large influx of refugees, the city administration continues to ask for apartments or houses to be made available for accommodation if possible.
If you would like to offer rentable living space to the district town of Merzig for this humanitarian task, please contact the municipal department of Public Safety and Order (phone number: 06861/85-388 or email address: ukraine@merzig.de).
For the people arriving here, it is often difficult to orient themselves and find their way in the new living situation. They receive support from volunteers. Volunteers are still needed here. If you are interested in getting involved, you are welcome to contact the district town of Merzig (phone number: 06861/85-383 or email address: integration@merzig.de). Translators (Ukrainian and/or Russian) are also welcome.
