Around 21:50, passers-by noticed a visible steam on the market square. Upon closer inspection, they realized that a hydrant had burst in the area. The hydrant was set up for the Christmas market. Uncontrolled water flowed from the hydrant. Due to the strong frost, the water outflow caused a mirror-like road surface in the market square and in parts of Lindenstraße.
The passers-by alerted the firefighters at the fire station, who were still there after their weekly drill.
Two firefighters dared to enter the water fountain and quickly shut off the water supply with a hydrant key. Meanwhile, the fire department secured the slippery hazardous area. Afterwards, the municipal works department spread the area extensively.
The police and the city utilities supported the operation.
