Offspring among the Guanacos at Saarbrücken Zoo
At the beginning of July, a guanaco stallion was born at Saarbrücken Zoo.
The newborn chulengo, as the young guanacos are called, is healthy and developing well. The birth went smoothly. The mother of the young animal is also doing well. She has already successfully raised offspring several times.
Just a few hours after their birth, chulengos can stand and walk independently – an important prerequisite for their survival in the wild, as they must immediately follow the herd.
At Saarbrücken Zoo, mother and young spent the first days protected in the stable. There they were able to get used to each other in a calm environment and strengthen their bond. Meanwhile, the young stallion is exploring the entire facility together with his mother. Accordingly, visitors now have the opportunity to observe the little guanaco stallion on his explorations.
The wild relatives of the llamas
Guanacos belong to the camel family and are the wild ancestors of llamas. Their home is the steppes and highlands of South America, where they are exposed to extreme weather conditions such as cold, wind, and dryness. The animals are excellently adapted to these habitats.
Saarbrücken Zoo, with around 200,000 visitors annually, is one of the largest attractions in the state capital Saarbrücken. It houses approximately 1,000 animals from more than 100 species and is actively involved in the fields of species conservation, research, and environmental education. The zoo is open daily.
