On 20.07.2026, a traffic accident involving two cars occurred late in the evening on St. Johanner Straße in Saarbrücken-Malstatt. A 42-year-old resident of Saarbrücken was driving his mid-size sedan on St. Johanner Straße towards Trierer Straße and intended to overtake the vehicle in front of him, a mid-size SUV driven by a 45-year-old from Saarbrücken, at the height of a gas station, despite a solid line in the curve. In doing so, the driver moved back to the right lane too early and collided with the SUV. As a result of the collision, the vehicle spun 180 degrees, and both vehicles subsequently collided with the bridge pillar of a railway underpass.
During the accident, a 16-year-old passenger in the SUV was slightly injured. Both vehicles sustained significant damage; one vehicle was no longer operational and had to be removed from the accident site by a towing service. It is not yet clear whether there was any damage to the bridge pillar.
During the investigation of the accident, it was revealed that the SUV driver was not in possession of the required driving license. Corresponding criminal proceedings have been initiated against him. Proceedings for negligent bodily injury and endangering road traffic have been initiated against the driver of the sedan.
For the duration of the accident investigation, St. Johanner Straße in the area of the accident site was completely closed for about one hour. This caused minor traffic disruptions; appropriate traffic measures were taken by the police.
