Press Release: Saarbrücken Fire Department rescues people from gondolas of the cable car in the Franco-German Garden
On Sunday, 19.07.2026, around 5:20 p.m., the integrated control center of Saarland received a report that there was a technical defect on the cable car in the Franco-German Garden in Saarbrücken and several people were in the gondolas who could no longer leave them independently.
For this reason, forces from the Saarbrücken Fire Department, including the special unit for rescue from heights and depths stationed at the professional fire department, were dispatched to the scene.
Upon arrival, the reported situation was quickly confirmed. On the cable car, a drive cable had slipped from the drive, and in the gondolas a total of 18 adults and children were trapped. Most people were rescued using two turntable ladders deployed by the fire department. Since various areas could not be reached with the turntable ladders, several people were lowered down from the gondolas by the professional fire department’s high-angle rescuers. After about 1.5 hours, all persons were freed from their distressing situation and the fire department operation was concluded.
The rescued persons were subsequently medically examined by the emergency services also present on site. All persons were well, so fortunately no injuries were reported as a result of the incident.
The operation involved around 30 personnel from the professional and volunteer fire departments of Saarbrücken, the emergency medical services and the police.
