Protect hedgehogs – use robotic lawn mowers only during the day
Hedgehogs are among the most beneficial garden inhabitants and make an important contribution to the natural balance by eating numerous pests such as insects, caterpillars, and slugs. At the same time, the animals are now listed on the Red List of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) as their populations are increasingly declining. Therefore, the city of Lebach has now launched an information campaign to protect hedgehogs in cooperation with the local nature conservation officers.
An increasing danger to the nocturnal animals is posed by robotic lawn mowers. Since hedgehogs do not flee when threatened but roll up, many devices do not recognize them as obstacles in time. The result is often severe injuries or death of the animals. Conservation organizations therefore strongly recommend operating robotic lawn mowers only during the day.
In addition to the conscious use of garden technology, naturally designed gardens, permeable fences, as well as avoiding pesticides and slug pellets can also contribute to the protection of hedgehogs.
Detailed information on hedgehog protection, assistance for injured animals, and links to further information can be found by interested parties in the upcoming issue of the Lebacher Anzeiger as well as at Stadt Lebach - Der grüne Mittelpunkt - SG 402 Umwelt , Grünflächen, Friedhofswesen.
