On the French National Day, an extraordinary moment over the European city of Saarlouis drew numerous enthusiastic glances: Two Tornados of the German Air Force flew over the German-French Friendship Festival on the Ravelin in the afternoon, thereby setting a visible sign of the close partnership between Germany and France.

The flyover was made possible in close cooperation with the German Armed Forces. In the year of its 70th anniversary, the German Air Force linked part of its celebration with the festivities of the French National Day in the garrison and European city of Saarlouis, thus emphasizing the special bond between the two nations.

For the many visitors of the Friendship Festival, it was the emotional highlight of a day during which the European idea and the German-French friendship were experienced in a special way.

“The flyover of the two Tornados was much more than an impressive sight in the sky. It was a powerful symbol of the close friendship between Germany and France, of mutual trust. That we were able to experience this historic moment together with the French Consul General and so many citizens makes me proud and grateful,” said Mayor Marc Speicher.

Saarlouis has been closely connected with the German Armed Forces for decades. As a garrison town and home to the Airborne Brigade 1 as well as the Saarland State Command, there are established relationships characterized by mutual trust and close cooperation. All the greater is the appreciation for the German Air Force and all the soldiers involved who have planned and carried out this special flyover with the utmost professionalism.

“My sincere thanks go to the German Air Force, the Tactical Air Force Wing 33 from Büchel, and the entire Bundeswehr. That they embraced our idea and made this special moment possible is anything but a given. The flyover was not only an impressive aviation achievement but also a visible sign of how close the bond is between the Bundeswehr and our garrison town Saarlouis,” Speicher continues.

The Tornado flyover fitted impressively into the program of the German-French Friendship Festival and will remain in the memory of many visitors as an extraordinary moment – as a symbol of lived partnership, European unity, and mutual respect between Germany and France.
