Title defended – City Football Cup goes to Steinbach again
The annual football city cup for active players took place at the Aschbacher Waldstadion from July 7 to 12.
Unlike in the league round, the playing communities (SG Lebach-Landsweiler, SG Saubach, and SG Thalexweiler-Aschbach) compete separately for their home villages. Additionally, SC Falscheid as well as RSV Steinbach-Dörsdorf from the cross-municipality playing community SG Scheuern-Steinbach-Dörsdorf participate. This results in an attractive field of eight teams, which will compete in two groups for the city cup of the city of Lebach.
In Group A, the association and state league teams FV Lebach, RSV Steinbach/Dörsdorf, SC Gresaubach, and SV Landsweiler started. In Group B, the district and county league teams SV Aschbach, SV Thalexweiler, SV Niedersaubach, and SC Falscheid competed for the title.
This group division, which has been successfully carried out for several years in coordination with the clubs, creates greater equal opportunities among the participating teams.
The first and second placed teams each qualify for the final in their respective group; no cross-play takes place. In the final of Group B, SC Falscheid prevailed over Niedersaubach in a penalty shootout after a 3-3 draw in regular time, securing a prize of 150 euros.
In Group A, where the higher-class teams played, FV Lebach and RSV Steinbach/Dörsdorf prevailed and consequently faced each other in the final. Lebach was dominant but could not score against the dedicated and fighting team of RSV. Therefore, the decision had to be made by a penalty shootout. In this, the young goalkeeper of RSV exceeded himself, saving three penalties from Lebach and securing the victory for his team. The SG Scheuern-Steinbach-Dörsdorf was thus able to defend their title from the previous year, securing the City Cup 2026 as well as 500 euros in prize money.
At the award ceremony, Fred Metschberger, Deputy Mayor representing the Mayor, as well as Peter Knobe, Chairman of the City Association of Sports Clubs, thanked the host SV Aschbach for the excellent organization of the tournament and the well-maintained pitch despite the long heatwave. They also expressed their gratitude to the participating teams, the numerous spectators who attended the matches throughout the week, and especially to levoBank as the sponsor.
