Yesterday afternoon, as part of the temporarily reintroduced internal border controls at the Metzer Straße border crossing in Saarbrücken, the Federal Police checked a pedestrian coming from France. According to his statements, he could not identify himself and believed that there was no obligation to do so within the Schengen area. Due to his increasingly aggressive behavior, the man was searched. During the search, a document that allowed his identification was found. A warrants check then made the reason for his behavior clear, as he had been issued an arrest warrant by the Frankenthal public prosecutor's office. The cause was an outstanding fine totaling EUR 5,126.50, which he had been sentenced to pay for leaving the scene of an accident unlawfully. Since the 36-year-old Frenchman initially showed no willingness to pay, he was taken to the station at Goldene Bremm. After being informed there that in case of non-payment he would have to serve a substitute custodial sentence of 50 days, he changed his mind and settled the fine. After that, he was able to leave the station—financially much lighter—and continue his journey on foot.
