Culinary hike "Wieslein deck dich" invites you to a gourmet experience in the Saargau
Lace up your hiking boots, enjoy the most beautiful views of the Saargau, and discover regional delicacies along the way: The popular culinary hike "Wieslein deck dich" invites you to a day of enjoyment in breathtaking nature on Sunday, August 16, 2026. Together with District Administrator Patrik Lauer, the tour takes you on a roughly seven-kilometer journey through the diverse landscape of the Saargau – with exciting stories, culinary surprises, and some real highlights along the route.
The moderate hike leads over charming paths of the Saargau and selected sections of the popular Traumschleife Vauban-Steig. Along the way, several enjoyment stations await, featuring specialties from regional producers of the regional initiative "Ebbes von Hei!" and exciting insights into the history and peculiarities of the region. Hiking guide Jürgen Baus accompanies the group and takes the participants on an entertaining journey through the history of the fortress town Saarlouis and the culture of Saargau, sharing anecdotes that are likely to surprise even locals.
A special highlight awaits the hiking group at the Devil's Castle. The historic castle ruins from the 13th century are one of the region's most popular excursion destinations and offer an impressive backdrop with a wide view over the Saarlouis district and beyond. Here, it's time to breathe deeply, enjoy, and linger. Together with André Wegmann from "André's Message in a Bottle," participants can learn about and taste selected wines during a wine tasting and let the special atmosphere of this place take effect. The Devil's Castle support association also provides exciting insights into the history of the castle, making the place historically tangible.
On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the partnership between the districts of Saarlouis and Bochnia/Poland, a special treat from Poland will be offered this year. Selected Polish specialties enrich the culinary concept of the hike and provide additional taste experiences along the route.
To conclude, a relaxed picnic with a variety of regional products awaits on the meadow of the FSZ-Saar at Düren airfield. The lovingly packed picnic baskets are filled with regional delicacies from the regional initiative “Ebbes von Hei!” from the “Altrowwer Genusseck” and provide a delightful end to the hike. While the hiking group winds down the day together, guests can, in good weather, also watch the parachutists of the parachuting center in action – a spectacular view to close a special day of hiking.
Important: The hike is classified as moderate and is aimed at experienced hikers. The route partly leads over narrow and natural paths. Surefootedness, hiking experience, as well as sturdy footwear and suitable outdoor equipment are therefore required. The event will take place in all weather conditions.
“Wieslein deck dich 2026” is an event organized by the tourism professionals of the Saarlouis district in cooperation with the European City of Saarlouis, the FSZ-Saar, the Teufelsburg Support Association, and “Andrés Flaschenpost”.

Meeting point on the day of the event is at 9 a.m., the start of the hike is at 9:30 a.m.
