First anniversary of the death of honorary citizen Albrecht Herold
On the first anniversary of Albrecht Herold's death, the city of St. Ingbert commemorated its honorary citizen Albrecht Herold on July 2, 2026. On this occasion, Mayor Dr. Ulli Meyer, together with Deputy Local Mayor Fabian Roschy, laid a wreath at his grave to set a visible sign of remembrance for an outstanding personality in the city's history.
Albrecht Herold, born on August 20, 1929 in St. Ingbert, remained closely connected to his hometown throughout his life. As a trade unionist, social democrat, and parliamentarian, he shaped the political and social life in Saarland for decades. From 1965 to 1994, he was a member of the Saarland state parliament, initially as a deputy, later as First Vice President, and from 1980 to 1994 as President of the Saarland Parliament. In this role, he led the state parliament through three legislative periods and earned high regard across party lines.
For St. Ingbert, Albrecht Herold was much more than a prominent state politician. He was a son of the city, a reliable contact person for the concerns of the local people, and a committed advocate of social responsibility. His dedication to the Saarland steel industry, to employees, and to the further development of his hometown remains unforgettable. By founding a housing cooperative at the Alte Schmelz, he also made an important contribution to securing and developing a district of significant urban history.
Albrecht Herold was honored many times for his outstanding life's work, including with the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany with Star and Sash, as well as the Saarland Order of Merit. The city of St. Ingbert awarded him honorary citizenship in recognition of his decades-long commitment to the city, the Saarland, and the people in the region.
“Albrecht Herold shaped St. Ingbert and the Saarland for decades with integrity, vigor, and great responsibility. He was a committed democrat, a passionate trade unionist, and a politician who always valued people more than office. He left a significant mark as a political bridge builder not only in our city. The city of St. Ingbert will honor his memory with respect,” praised Mayor Dr. Ulli Meyer the life’s work of Albrecht Herold on the occasion of the wreath-laying ceremony.
