Quierschied: REWE store closes end of July - PENNY comes

REWE market in the center of Quierschied to become a PENNY market On Monday, July 6, 2026, the municipality of Quierschied was officially informed by REWE Markt GmbH via videoconference that the REWE store above the marketplace in Quierschied will be converted into a PENNY store. The REWE market is therefore expected to close by the end of July 2026, with the PENNY market opening in November. “The rumor had been circulating for some time and was confirmed after the closure of the sausage and meat counter. However, the last status of communication between the municipality of Quierschied and REWE Markt GmbH was quite different: about three years ago, there was talk of a possible expansion of the existing market. The municipality was willing to fulfill the operator’s wishes, but surprisingly, the plans of the operator and the owner changed, and instead of expansion, the REWE market will now be closed,” said Mayor Lutz Maurer, who attended the videoconference together with local head Stefan Ziegler. Although REWE has fulfilled its contractual agreements since the market’s opening in 2010, the mayor and the municipal committees had hoped for continued talks to preserve REWE and, more generally, a “more sensitive handling of this very significant issue”: “After all, with the loss of the ‘full-range supermarket,’ we are talking about a massive reduction of offerings at an excellent location in the center of our largest municipal district,” said Mayor Maurer, who, on behalf of the administration and considering the 2009 contract, “unfortunately sees no legal recourse” to oppose the reduction of the offering. The contact person responsible for expansion apologized on behalf of REWE Markt GmbH during the videoconference on Monday morning for his company’s poor communication with the municipality. Mayor Maurer hopes for more constructive cooperation with the future operator PENNY, which originates from the “REWE family” and intends to implement its modern market hall concept in Quierschied.
