State capital prepares participation in UN sustainability conference in New York
On June 22, 2026, the state capital Saarbrücken held a preparatory conference for the United Nations High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) together with representatives from civil society, science, business, and administration. The aim of the meeting was to gather perspectives, concerns, and concrete examples from Saarbrücken to be brought into the international discussions at the HLPF in New York.
Saarbrücken part of the German delegation
The federal government has selected Saarbrücken as part of the German delegation for the HLPF. The forum will take place from July 7 to 15, 2026, at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. It is the most important body for reviewing the 2030 Agenda and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The participation of the state capital is supported by the Service Center for Municipalities in One World (SKEW). Mayor Barbara Meyer will represent Saarbrücken from July 12 to 16.
The basis for participation is, among other things, the first Voluntary Local Review (VLR) of the state capital Saarbrücken. The municipal sustainability report is based on the reporting format of the United Nations and demonstrates how the state capital implements the sustainable development goals at the local level. It has been published in German, English, and French.
Municipal Perspectives for New York
As part of the preparatory conference, the participants exchanged views on this year's focus topics of the HLPF. The main focus was on successful examples from Saarbrücken, existing challenges, as well as suggestions and solutions from other municipalities. The attendees contributed their experiences and perspectives from practice.
The results of the conference are incorporated into the preparation of the Saarbrücken contribution to the HLPF. They are intended to help bring municipal perspectives from Saarbrücken into international discussions.
Mayor Barbara Meyer emphasizes:
"Municipalities play a central role in achieving the sustainability goals: they concretely shape education, mobility, energy supply, urban development, and climate adaptation locally. Saarbrücken’s participation in the HLPF therefore offers the opportunity to make the importance of municipal sustainability policy internationally visible and to strengthen the voice of municipalities in global debates."
