Last weekend, the Traffic Routes Control Unit (KEV) of the Saarbrücken Main Customs Office recorded several successes. During the inspection of two vehicles, the officers discovered 23,360 cigarettes hidden in seats. In addition, the customs officers executed two outstanding arrest warrants. By seizing the untaxed cigarettes, a tax loss of more than 4,800 euros was prevented.
"The inspections took place on the premises of the Technical Relief Organization Kaiserslautern and were carried out with the support of a scan van from the Darmstadt Main Customs Office," explains Nicole Hübner, spokeswoman for the Saarbrücken Main Customs Office. A scan van is a mobile X-ray inspection system housed in a vehicle with special interior equipment.

"The cargo underwent an X-ray inspection. During the evaluation of the scan images, the officers discovered irregularities in two pieces of seating furniture. Upon closer examination, 23,360 cigarettes were revealed," Hübner continued.
A tax offense proceeding was initiated against the 35-year-old Romanian driver. The cigarettes were confiscated.
During the inspection of another vehicle, the officers discovered two open arrest warrants against the 66-year-old Moldovan driver. Since he was unable to pay the outstanding fine of approximately 2,400 euros, he was taken by the police to the Zweibrücken correctional facility, where he is now serving the substitute prison sentence ordered.
