As part of the temporarily reintroduced controls at the internal border, a car with Parisian license plates carrying eight people was checked yesterday evening near the BAB 6 - Goldene Bremm. While the 36-year-old driver was able to properly identify himself, this was not the case for the other occupants. The Bangladeshis aged between 16 and 18 did not have the necessary documents required for entry. When asked about their destination, they all stated that they were on a one-day city trip to Vienna. For this endeavor, they had hired the driver, whose contact details they found through a flyer, and whose name, sounding Bangladeshi, had caught their interest.
Further investigations revealed that the driver is indeed a Bangladeshi national and advertises his services as a self-employed professional driver. He stated that he had been booked by one of the occupants for the trip to Vienna for a flat fee of 3,000 euros, which he was able to prove through chat history from a messaging service. A planned return trip was not traceable in this history, but according to the driver, was scheduled for the following day. Although the federal police could not disprove this, they had some doubts about his statements. Neither the driver nor the occupants could present a booking confirmation for the planned overnight stay in Vienna, which is quite unusual in such cases.
Proceedings for the attempted illegal entry into Germany were initiated against the seven Bangladeshis aged between 16 and 18. They were denied entry and subsequently returned to France. All declared their willingness to return to Paris.
The 36-year-old driver took charge of the return trip but will also have to answer for himself, as an investigation procedure for human smuggling has been initiated against him.
