Four New Bean Geese at Saarbrücken Zoo
Since mid-June, four bean geese have been living at Saarbrücken Zoo.
Visitors can find the geese at the flamingo pond located right at the entrance of the zoo. The animals are usually seen together. Both pairs come from the Berlin Zoo.
Endangered species
The name of the Leine goose comes from the Leine River in Lower Saxony, the native region of this species. It is one of the oldest domestic breeds in existence.
According to the Red List of the Society for the Conservation of Old and Endangered Domestic Animal Breeds (GEH), the Leine goose is considered critically endangered. At the time of industrialization and mechanization of agriculture, the Leine goose was hardly kept anymore, causing its population to decline sharply. It was not until the 1990s that breeding efforts began. Today, zoos and animal parks also participate in the preservation of this rare domestic animal breed.
Background on the Zoo
The Saarbrücken Zoo, with around 200,000 visitors annually, is one of the largest attractions in Saarland. It is home to approximately 1,000 animals from over 100 species and is committed to species conservation, research, and environmental education. The zoo is open daily.
