BARMER welcomes initiative in the state parliament to relieve nursing home residents
Saarbrücken, June 23, 2026 - BARMER welcomes the motion submitted by the CDU parliamentary group in the Saarland state parliament for the state to take over the investment costs for nursing homes. Dunja Kleis, State Managing Director of BARMER in Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland, says: "Those living in nursing homes pay the costs for modernization and renovation of the facility. Saarland subsidizes these investment costs only to a very limited extent. The state must finally provide significant relief to nursing home residents by fully covering nursing home investment costs." This would currently result in a monthly saving of 533 euros for each resident. "If the state were also to take over the costs of training nursing apprentices instead of the residents in the future, there would be an additional monthly relief of 216 euros for those in need of care during their first year of stay," Kleis calculates.
