Black, Red, and Gold and Stars and Stripes – 250 Years of German-American Relations Between Saar and Pfalz
Thematic walk "Black-Red-Gold and Stars and Stripes – 250 years of German-American relations between Saar and Palatinate" in Homburg
The signing of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, is considered the birth certificate and moment of birth of the United States of America founded thereby. This year, the USA can thus celebrate its 250th anniversary. This proud jubilee, celebrated in the United States as well as worldwide through the event series "America250," also invites us to recall and ideally to sustainably shape 250 years of German-American relations in all their facets.
There are many diverse traces of 250 years of German-American history, especially between Saar and Palatinate, which continue to have an impact up to the present day. An impression of this will be given on Friday, July 3rd, with the themed walk "Black-Red-Gold and Stars and Stripes – 250 years of German-American relations between Saar and Palatinate," to which the German-American Institute (DAI) Saarland, together with the Saarpfalz district, invites the interested public on the eve of "Independence Day."
In addition to exciting historical aspects, this context also addresses, among other things, the close partnership between the Saarpfalz district and Henrico County in Virginia, which was initiated in 1996 and has existed since 1997. "America250 is a great opportunity to congratulate our friends in the USA and at the same time to remember 250 years of shared history and diverse relations," says District Administrator Frank John. "Even though thousands of kilometers separate us, the Saarpfalz district remains in our hearts," assures Henrico County Manager John A. Vithoulkas from the other side of the Atlantic. Incidentally, the official celebrations for the 250th birthday of the USA also begin in Henrico County on July 3rd.
The meeting point for the approximately 2.5-hour themed tour is at 4 p.m. at the Homburg "Freiheitsbrunnen" (corner of Eisenbahnstraße/Am Rondell). The city tour ends at 5:45 p.m. at the "WoodenWave," a visible symbol of the partnership anniversary from the German-American school project with the sculptor Martin Steinert, at the Mannlich-Gymnasium on Hiltebrandstraße. The artist will be present.
Thanks to the kind support of the German American Institute Saarland (DAI) and funded by the Federal Foreign Office of the Federal Republic of Germany and the Embassy of the United States of America, participation in this dialogue tour is free of charge. Registration is not required.
