Social Minister Magnus Jung awarded the Cross of Merit on Ribbon of the Federal Republic of Germany to Adrian Schmitz from Merzig yesterday afternoon. This honored his decades-long voluntary commitment to people in need, inclusion, social cohesion, and lived solidarity.
“Adrian Schmitz has found the strength, despite his difficult personal fate, to give hope and support to other people. This extraordinary commitment deserves our highest respect,” emphasized Jung.
In 1991, Schmitz lost his eyesight as a result of a traffic accident. Instead of withdrawing, he decided to help others and advocate for those in need of support. Together with other supporters, he founded the association Herzensengel e.V. in 2012, which is still known today for quick, uncomplicated, and compassionate assistance. Under his chairmanship, numerous projects and aid measures for people with disabilities, families in need, and other individuals requiring help have been supported.
The minister praised Schmitz as a role model for lived humanity and civic engagement: "Adrian Schmitz has shown for many years that help begins where people take responsibility for each other. His life path is encouraging and stands as an example of social cohesion in our country."
