PM_Orchard hike around the Haus Saargau in Wallerfangen-Gisingen
Interested parties can look forward to a guided hike on the topic of "Habitat Orchard Meadow" on Friday, July 3, 2026, from 4:30 p.m. to approximately 7:30 p.m. The starting point is the Haus Saargau in the Wallerfanger district of Gisingen. As part of the event, which is offered by the Saarlouis district, the Saarlouis Adult Education Center (KVHS), and the Saar-Hunsrück Nature Park, graduate biologist Michael Keller will provide many interesting insights into fruit cultivation and ecology. The participation fee is 15 euros, including a tasting. Registrations are accepted by the KVHS Saarlouis via email at info@kvhs-saarlouis.de or by phone at 06831 444 – 413.
Orchard meadows are a defining element of the Saarlouiser Gau landscape. Although the structures have become more fragmented, as is evident from the term "orchard meadows" used today, many places are still surrounded by parts of orchard belts. This especially includes the Wallerfangen district of Gisingen.
On this guided hike, graduate biologist Michael Keller provides exciting insights into the ecology and diversity of traditional orchards, which are valuable habitats for plants, animals – and people. He explains how to maintain orchards, which varieties are suitable, and the role of pruning, mowing, and location. Participants will learn how the cultural landscape develops throughout the seasons – expertly, clearly, and in close connection with nature.
On the way and concluding at Haus Saargau, a few samples of the nuanced and tasty products from the orchards are offered. Visitors can try Viez, juices, fine spirits, fruit spreads, or whatever else can be made from fruits. A walk that combines knowledge, nature experience, and enjoyment!
The Lorraine Farmhouse Museum Haus Saargau is located in the Wallerfangen district of Gisingen (address: Zum Scheidberg 11, 66798 Wallerfangen). Visitors can use the nearby Gisingen hiking parking lot (Gaustraße 46, 66798 Wallerfangen), a five-minute walk from Haus Saargau. More information about the Haus Saargau museum is available at www.rendezvous-saarlouis.de or by phone at 06837 91 27 62.
