Creativity meets language proficiency: Saarland honors the winners of the Federal Foreign Language Competition 2026
Seventeen students and eleven teams from Saarland impressed at the Federal Foreign Language Competition (BWFS) 2026 with creative and linguistically outstanding contributions.
Two soloists and two teams also qualified for the national finals and represent Saarland in the nationwide competitions.
Minister of Education Christine Streichert-Clivot:
"Foreign languages connect people and open up new perspectives. This year’s award winners have impressively demonstrated how creative and versatile language skills can be. With great dedication, ingenuity, and linguistic ability, they have created outstanding contributions and have established themselves beyond the state borders. I warmly congratulate them on these special achievements."
In the SOLO category (grades 8 to 10), 23 students from Saarland demonstrated their skills in the competition languages English, French, and Latin. 17 of them were recognized for their achievements. Particularly successful were Evelyn Korchmenko from the German-French Gymnasium Saarbrücken (English) and Katharina Röder from the Peter-Wust-Gymnasium Merzig (Latin): With a first prize at the state level, they qualified for the nationwide language tournament, which will take place from September 23 to 26, 2026, in Papenburg (Lower Saxony).
Also in the team competition (grades 6 to 10), the students from Saarland demonstrated great creativity and enthusiasm for foreign languages. 33 groups with a total of 163 participants submitted entries in English and French. Eleven teams were awarded. The teams "Strain" from Christian-von-Mannlich-Gymnasium Homburg and "The Twists of Destiny (Part 1)" from Gymnasium am Schloss Saarbrücken can look forward to qualifying for the nationwide language festival at the end of June 2026 in Dachau (Bavaria).
The Federal Foreign Language Competition offers students of all school types the opportunity to use and further develop their language skills creatively far beyond the classroom. The focus is not only on linguistic achievements but also on teamwork, cultural openness, and creativity. Saarland has been successfully participating in the competition for many years. At the state level, the patronage is held by Minister of Education Christine Streichert-Clivot.
