The Action Alliance Blood Donation Saarland is organizing a blood donation campaign on World Blood Donor Day in cooperation with the Ministry of Economy, Innovation, Digital Affairs and Energy of Saarland.
The blood donation campaign organized by the Blood Donation Action Alliance will take place on June 15, 2026, from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM on the ground floor of the Ministry of Economy, Innovation, Digital and Energy, Franz-Josef-Röder-Straße 17, 66119 Saarbrücken. Employees of the ministries as well as interested citizens are warmly invited to participate in the campaign and make an important contribution to medical care in the Saarland with their donation.
"Blood donations save lives – every day. Especially in times of fluctuating donation numbers, social cohesion is more important than ever. With this joint campaign, we want to set a visible sign of solidarity and responsibility," explains Health Minister Magnus Jung on behalf of the Blood Donation Saarland action alliance.
Economic Minister Jürgen Barke also emphasizes the importance of commitment: "A secure supply of blood products is indispensable for hospitals, emergency care, and many therapies. Every single blood donation can be crucial and save lives."
In principle, every healthy person aged 18 and over can donate blood. Before each donation, a medical examination is conducted to ensure the safety of both the donors and the recipients.
For blood donation, a valid identity card or another official identification document, as well as the blood donation card if available, should be brought along. It is also advisable to drink enough fluids and have a light meal before donating.
In addition to the blood donation, the Stefan Morsch Foundation also offers the opportunity on-site to register as a stem cell donor. With a typing, volunteers can be entered into the donor registry and thus potentially provide life-saving help for people with leukemia or other serious diseases of the blood-forming system.
The Saarland Blood Donation Action Alliance and the Ministry of Economic Affairs call on all citizens to take advantage of the opportunity to donate blood and register for stem cell typing, thereby sending a strong message of solidarity.
Further Information
The annual World Blood Donor Day on June 14 was initiated by the World Health Organization (WHO). It honors the commitment of voluntary blood donors worldwide and at the same time draws attention to the indispensable importance of a safe and continuous blood supply. World Blood Donor Day thus stands for gratitude, awareness, and a call for solidarity in action.
Blood products cannot yet be artificially produced despite modern medicine. They are needed daily, among other things, for accident victims, during surgeries, in cancer therapy, or for the treatment of serious illnesses. Especially during vacation periods or during increased waves of illness, donation numbers often decline, while demand remains consistently high. A single donation can help several patients.
To register as a stem cell donor, a simple cheek swab is usually sufficient. Important: Registration does not replace blood donation – both forms of commitment help seriously ill people in different ways. Anyone wishing to be typed should also bring a valid ID and complete the required consent form on site.
