Workshops "Scything and Peening" and "Grafting Woody Plants Yourself" at the Cultural Landscape Center Haus Lochfeld
Homburg/Wittersheim: The special-purpose association "Saar-Blies-Gau/Auf der Lohe" is offering the workshop "Scything and Peening" on Thursday, June 18, and the workshop "Grafting Your Own Woody Plants" a week later on June 25. The participation fee is six euros per person for each workshop. The venue for both events is the garden area of Haus Lochfeld, starting at 6 p.m.
Mowing with a scythe is one of the oldest cultural techniques of mankind and has a very long tradition. But how do you handle a scythe, how do you peen and mow correctly? Instructor Gerhard Niklas provides a wealth of tips, tricks, and guidance on the proper use of the scythe and easy mowing, showing how to mow your meadow easily and cost-effectively while sparing the environment from the noise and petrol fumes of “meditative” scything. Participants can practice peening and mowing under guidance, preferably with their own equipment.
Almost all types of fruit trees need to be grafted if their variety characteristics, such as taste and ripening time, are to be preserved unchanged. This also applies to many ornamental shrubs. One of the methods for true-to-type propagation is the grafting technique known since ancient times. There are both complicated and easy-to-learn grafting methods that can be done at home. Fruit tree expert Harry Lavall demonstrates in theory and practice how fruit trees and ornamental shrubs can be grafted. At the site, participants will carry out the grafting themselves on roses that can be purchased there; suitable pruning knives should be brought along.
The number of participants for the courses is limited. Registration by June 16 at the latest (scything and peening) and by June 23 at the latest (grafting woody plants yourself) with the Saarpfalz districtis required by phone on weekdays during business hours at (06841) 104-7228 or anytime via email at haus-lochfeld@saarpfalz-kreis.de.There you can find more information (including directions) about the offerings of the Cultural Landscape Center. Due to limited parking at the house, participants are asked to use parking spaces in the surrounding area or to form car pools.
