Theater service for Bertolt Brecht's "The Threepenny Opera"
Saarbrücken. On the occasion of the staging of the play "The Threepenny Opera" at the Saarland State Theatre, a themed church service related to the play will take place on Sunday, June 7, at 11 a.m. in the Johanneskirche in Saarbrücken (Cecilienstraße 2).
The church service addresses the portrayals of humanity in the play, the characters caught between survival, morality, and personal failure, as well as Brecht's famous line "First comes food, then comes morality." It also brings into focus the question of what truly sustains people—and the longings, hopes, and needs that Brecht’s characters reveal.
In the conversation between Pastor Herwig Hoffmann and Artistic Director Christoph Mehler, the special relevance of the play from today's perspective will also be discussed, as well as which experiences of our time are reflected in it.
Ensemble members Gaby Pochert (“Mrs. Peachum”) and Bernd Geiling (“Mr. Peachum”) will perform a scene from the play. The service will be musically accompanied by musical director Christoph Iacono on the piano.
The play "The Threepenny Opera" is based on the eponymous stage play by Bertolt Brecht and Elisabeth Hauptmann from 1928. The story, set in London, revolves around the gang leader MacNeath ("Mackie Messer"), who secretly marries the daughter of the head of the London beggar mafia, Johnny Peachum. Peachum then wants to hand him over to the police, but Mackie Messer repeatedly manages to save himself through various good connections.
