Sports hall Saarstraße in Wehrden reopened for sports activities after extensive renovation
The sports hall on Saarstraße in the Wehrden district is now once again available to citizens for training and club sports. After extensive structural renovations and technical modernization, the hall was officially reopened for sports activities at the beginning of April 2026.
Mayor Stephan Tautz explicitly welcomes the reopening: "With the renovated sports hall, we are creating an attractive and contemporary place for sports, encounters, and community in the Wehrden district once again. The investment directly benefits the citizens and strengthens local club life."
The hall had been unavailable for training operations since November 2022, initially due to its use as a temporary emergency shelter for refugees and subsequently because of renovation and refurbishment work. With the receipt of funding from the "Investment Pact for the Promotion of Sports Facilities" program in March 2024, the comprehensive modernization was implemented.
A total of around 1.128 million euros was invested in the renovation, of which 820,000 euros were originally eligible for funding, with a maximum grant of 738,000 euros.
As part of the work, the sports hall was fundamentally modernized and significantly upgraded. The entrance area received a new, barrier-free design with ramp access and a post-and-beam façade. The sanitary facilities were also completely renovated and supplemented by an additional extension with changing rooms, showers, and restrooms. The entire facility is now accessible without barriers.
A special focus was on energy-efficient renovation: the old gas-powered heating system was replaced by a modern air-to-water heat pump, and the lighting was completely converted to LED technology. In addition, the roof and facade areas were highly insulated, which sustainably reduces the energy consumption of the hall and lowers operating costs.
The interior of the hall was completely renovated as well: The old sports floor was replaced and supplemented with a modern area-elastic floor with integrated underfloor heating. In addition, walls and ceilings were repaired and redesigned.
The city of Völklingen emphasizes that the measures not only preserve the structural fabric of the hall but also make an important contribution to climate and environmental protection.
With the reopening, the clubs in the Wehrden district now have access to a modern, energy-efficient, and accessible sports hall once again – a tangible added value for the entire district and the local community life.
