All ten cities and municipalities of the Regional Association are taking part again this year. The starting signal for the three-week event will be on Saturday, May 30. The goal of the Stadtradeln campaign is to promote the bicycle as a CO2-neutral means of transportation. Regional Association Director Dr. Carolin Lehberger said: “The Stadtradeln campaign shows that climate protection begins locally and that even small changes in everyday life can have a big impact. Together, we send a message for sustainable mobility, active climate protection, and a livable community.” Last year, around 2,800 active cyclists participated in the Regional Association area. With almost 440,000 kilometers traveled, they saved about 72 tons of CO2 compared to fictitious car use. When looking at kilometers ridden per inhabitant, the city of Püttlingen was ahead among the cities and municipalities in the Regional Association. Here, it was more than two kilometers per capita at the end. This also secured Püttlingen first place among the most bicycle-active cities with a population between 15,000 and 25,000 in Saarland. The schools sponsored by the Regional Association were also successful. The Marie-Luise-Kaschnitz Gymnasium in Völklingen ranked second among the most bicycle-active secondary schools in Saarland. In the category of secondary schools with the most rides per team member, four schools of the Regional Association—the Bellevue Community School, KBBZ Halberg, the Otto-Hahn Gymnasium in Saarbrücken, and the Dudweiler Community School—occupied the top spots in Saarland. The Friedrich-Joachim-Stengel School also ranked among the most bicycle-active special schools, and the European School Saarland took second place in the newcomer ranking. Registration for the competition is via the website www.stadtradeln.de. There, participants select their municipality of residence and can join the municipality’s "Open Team" or create their own team, which is possible with as few as two people. Then, from May 30 to June 19, participants pedal hard for three weeks. Participants independently record their ridden kilometers online via the kilometer log or the Stadtradeln app. At the end of the event, the most bicycle-active schools and municipalities in Saarland will be awarded by the Saarland Ministry of Mobility.
