PM_Senior Citizens' Safety Day of the Saarlouis District: Interactive Activities in Saarlouis City Center
Around the glass pavilion on Französische Straße in Saarlouis, the senior safety advisors of the Saarlouis district recently organized an event where citizens of all ages could obtain comprehensive information on the topic of "Safety of older people in the home and in road traffic." Numerous partners participated, including the Malteser Hilfsdienst, the Weiße Ring, the Verkehrswacht Saarlouis, the Saarlouis police, and the Saarland public transport service "mobisaar."
The district deputy Bernd Valentin opened the event with thanks to the volunteer senior safety advisors: "You are important contacts in the municipalities and make a valuable contribution to prevention work. You inform older people about safety-relevant topics such as burglary protection, fraud schemes – for example, the grandson trick – or issues related to violence prevention."
At the same time, Valentin appealed to the senior citizens to actively use the consulting and information services offered by the senior safety advisors.
Subsequently, René Gaspard from the Crime Prevention Department of the State Police Headquarters clearly demonstrated how quickly a house break-in can occur through a window. The program was supplemented by additional interactive activities such as a walker course and reaction games. In addition, interested parties received extensive informational material as well as the opportunity for individual consultation sessions.
In the Saarlouis district, 46 volunteer senior safety advisors are currently active in their respective communities. They provide information at events, in clubs, and in personal conversations about dangers such as doorstep scams, the so-called grandchild trick over the phone, pickpocketing, or the protection of houses and apartments. The aim of their work is to give older people concrete tips and behavior recommendations to better protect themselves from crime.
For their work, the volunteers were comprehensively trained as part of a training program by the Saarland Ministry of the Interior, Building and Sports in cooperation with the State Police Directorate. During the Senior Safety Day, they took the opportunity to present their work to a broad public and to engage in conversations with interested citizens.
